Common Causes of Back Pain

Are you or someone you love suffering with back pain?

At Hardiman Performance our osteopaths understand how scary and debilitating back pain can be.

If you are suffering with back pain our osteopaths are equipped with the knowledge and skills to help you get back to a pain free life.  We understand that you are an individual and therefore tailor our examinations and treatments specific to your needs. There are however some common conditions in which we see on a regular basis in clinic. Below I have included some details on the most common types of back pain presentations.

Muscular Pain

Back pain is complex and often multi-factoral but despite the complexity most back pain is often caused by muscular issues. The reason for this pain varies including muscle strains, tightness, postural fatigue and spasm. The reassuring thing is that despite the high levels of pain and discomfort, with the right management, the pain is often short lived.

Our role as Osteopaths is to not only diagnose the pain but provide you with an explanation as to why it happened in the first place. Once we identify the route cause (postural, lifestyle, movement related etc) we can put together a treatment plan to not only decrease your pain but to prevent it from returning.

Discogenic Pain

There is a lot of fear associated with the pain that is associated with the discs in our backs. It is a common misconception that once you have a disc injury you are destined for a life of pain. There are lots of recent studies which show equal incidences of disc related issues in both back pain sufferers and people who have never had symptoms.

Common symptoms associated with discal pain include a thick band like pain on both sides of the spine, pain made worse by prolonged sitting and bending forward. Depending on the nature patients may also feel pain into one/both legs, pins and needles, weakness or numbness. Despite the severity of symptoms and with correct care, most patients are usually symptom free within 6 – 12 weeks.

Discal problems that our Osteopaths are able to help you with at Hardiman Performance include; Discitis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Disc Herniation and Disc Prolapse.

Our Osteopaths at Hardiman Performance are committed to getting you back to health in the quickest but most appropriate time frame. We do this by identifying both mechanical and lifestyle factors which lead you to experience pain.

The spine is an extremely important area for the body. It is home to the nerves which allow us to feel, move and thrive. For this reason we tend to be very protective over our backs. The joints in the spine are highly sensitive which can mean that even small changes to the local mechanics cause lots of pain.

Joints are commonly irritated by activities such as over extending your back, jarring your back whilst stepping off a curb and overuse in sports or prolonged postures.

Despite the intensity, pain from a spinal joint is rarely serious and responds very well to our osteopathic treatments.

Although back pain is normally of a benign cause, sometimes pain in the back can be related to something more serious which may require urgent care. For this reason we screen for a variety of causes of back pain to make sure that you are in the right hands and so that you get the care you need.  Our testing is thorough and allows us to identify conditions which may have been missed previously. Your health and safety is the priority of our Osteopaths.

If the cause of your pain is something we can help you with we will do just that. If however we think you need additional care elsewhere we will refer you to the correct person who is able to help.
